Interests

I started my career in crop science and went on to do participatory technology development on low-input and organic agriculture farms in with peasant farmers in developing countries. I now focus on the communication and knowledge systems that support natural resource management, often with a focus on subsistence farming. There is growing interest in learning about the networks of practitioners that innovate and share organic agricultural knowledge as they are substantially different from the conventional, high-input ones. These networks are decentralized, grounded in local economic, ecological and social contexts, and committed to collaborative learning. My other, complementary, research concentration is on rural and remote community participation in designing and evaluating the use and impact of information and communication technology.
