An innovative program to teach and upgrade agricultural skills is underway at the high school level in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The program, which is being offered this year for the first time, grew from the Niagara Regional Agricultural Economic Impact Study, which profiled a growing demand for people knowledgeable in agriculture. Specific need was identified for animal husbandry of small and large animals, as well as production of food, fuel, and fibre from crops.
To meet this need, teachers crafted a set of experiential courses designed to teach both concept and theory, including field trips and hands-on experiences. Skill sets to be emphasized include experimentation, research, critical thinking and analysis.
A working visit to the Guelph Centre for Urban Organic Farming will help these high schoolers to develop some of the many skills needed for contemporary commercial organic market gardening.
